Democratic Republic of Congo: Peace Deal Ends Years of Conflict and Opens Prospects of A New Era for the Congo and Africa

(Washington, DC) Parties to the four-year conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Unarmed Political Opposition and Civil Society Representatives signed, on December 17, 2002 in Pretoria, South Africa, a peace accord that provides for an all-inclusive transitional government and the holding of free and fair elections in about two-and-a-half years.

Dr. Alafuele M. Kalala, president of the Rally for a New Society (RNS) and the North American delegate to the peace talks in South Africa in which he also served as spokesperson and head of the delegation for the external opposition, will hold a press conference to share with the U.S. population and the international community the elements of the peace deal and prospects for the transitional government and the holding of free and fair elections in the Congo.
