APPEAL FOR INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE ALLEGATIONS OF SYSTEMATIC MASSACRES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Washington, DC - The Directorate of the Rally For A New Society (RNS) is deeply troubled by disturbing reports suggesting that the conflict in Eastern Zaire may have degenerated into acts of systematic killings against the civilian population.  Therefore the RNS calls upon the United Nations Secretary General and the Security Council to immediately launch a full-scale investigation into these allegations that some people have even described as “genocide.”  An independent investigation will help to establish the facts and to reestablish the credibility of the parties involved in the conflict in Eastern Zaire.

RNS calls on all the parties involved in the conflict to refrain from reprehensible criminal acts.   RNS calls particularly on the Alliance forces to maintain the highest standards possible in their conduct of the conflict.  The Alliance forces need to keep their allegiance to the goals of building a new society in which human rights are fully protected.  To stray from this objective would surely injure the legitimacy of their endeavor.

The Zairian people have suffered far too long under the brutal tyranny of the Mobutu, regime.  It would be another terrible travesty should these same people now be subjected to acts of genocide on Zairian soil.
We join the chorus of freedom and peace loving people throughout the world to appeal to the United Nations and to all of the members of the international community to act swiftly and decisively in launching
